What we know about the effect of Covid-19 on animals?

It is a widely believed and accepted theory that COVID-19 has its origin in animals specifically Bats but now that the virus has started spreading and transmitting in humans, the role of animals in the disease is becoming a buzz around every corner of the world. The most obvious of all the concern being is the disease communicable through pets as well. 


Genetically corona virus is very similar to the SARS virus and the SARS virus was proven to be susceptible to some domestic animal species- at least experimentally. The SARS virus was proven to be communicated by cats and dogs were thought to be lower risk based on experimental evidence. If we look at the genetic makeup of corona virus and how it attaches to cells- cats, ferrets, pigs and humans are among the species at the highest risk.So dogs aren't thought to be a big risk.( tvo.org)

Having said so there has also been a case of positive dog infection in Hong Kong. There has been very little animal testing and hence at this point only conjectures can be made without any sound evidence. As of now it would be only prudent to assume that there is a range of species that are susceptible. The animal species are widely seen by experts as a carrier of the virus rather than a host and hence their furs can serve as surface for transmission of the virus. 

Essentially testing of animals for COVID-19 is not suggested as it would lead to even greater stress on the medical fraternity. The solution lies in change of general perception towards animals i.e. treating animals like people. They must not be allowed to roam around freely across the locality as it will only increase the probability of a possible transmission from another host if they come into contact with them. Developing a sympathetic attitude towards the animal species by providing food for the stray animals and also taking care of the livestock animals keeping in mind the precautions to be followed for preventing the transmission of the virus is the need of the hour. 

Summarizing we can say that our average community animals are not going to pose much risk(as per a report from WHO). We also know that with the current lock down scenario a lot of house holds have pets as a means to improve their emotional health. We just need to make sure that these lovely creatures are safeguarded against any risk of COVID-19(even from their owners as well).
